Spring Lake Village Joins Michigan Communities Pausing Short-Term Rental Growth

Friday, November 22, 2024
The Village of Spring Lake, Michigan, has implemented a six-month moratorium on new short-term rental applications, effective until May 18, 2025. The unanimous decision by the village council stems from community concerns about the Short-Term Rental Overlay District established in January 2023, particularly in areas like Monarch, Dixie, and Rex Streets. Village leaders aim to reassess the ordinance, with the planning commission tasked with reviewing and potentially updating the rules. Public hearings will be held to gather resident input, although dates have not yet been announced.

Spring Lake follows neighboring Spring Lake Township, which enacted a similar pause in August for agricultural and rural residential zones, and other Michigan cities like Muskegon, which recently capped short-term rentals in certain neighborhoods. Communities across Michigan, including Park Township and Dexter Township, continue to grapple with balancing private property rights and maintaining the character of residential areas.
